(This piece is a scene from Star Wars: Rogue One.)
“All ships, prepare the jump to hyperspace!” commanded Admiral Raddus.
This was their time to escape the clutches of the Empire. As ships from the Rebel fleet began to dash into hyperspace, a colossal Imperial Star Destroyer shot out of hyperspace and began bombarding the Rebel flagship, the Profundity, with its dominating turbolasers. Frigates moved into attack position, attempting to help fight back, but it was to no avail. The Empire outgunned the ships within moments of the attack’s start.
After mere minutes, the Rebel flagship had been disabled. There was no jumping to hyperspace now. But all was not lost; the ship had just received a transmission from the planet below: the Empire’s secret plans. For the hope of the Rebellion, these plans had to be safely delivered back to Rebel High Command; it was their only hope.
Luckily, there was still hope for escape for a small crew of Rebels. Attached to the Profundity was a CR90 corvette fully prepared to shoot away once the plans were safely onboard. They just had to hold the Empire off until then. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Imperials knew of the transmission; however, the Rebels knew they were coming. It was a matter of when, not if.
A small ship shot across the space between Admiral Raddus’ ship and the Star Destroyer, two Tie-Fighters and two Tie-Bombers following on either side. They were planning on boarding the ship. The impending doom spread across the Rebels like a ship on fire.
An ear-splitting siren blared as the Imperials boarded the ship. A lone Rebel, a moment away from copying the transmission, stood over the terminal.
“Hurry!” shouted another crew member, desperately hitting the other’s shoulder, in an attempt to convey the severity of the situation.
Moments later, a datacard scurried out; the transmission had been copied over successfully. Now, it was time to get it on board the awaiting corvette. “We’ve got to go now!” the same Rebel shouted as they proceeded to run towards the airlock to board the corvette.
As they approached a group of Rebels breathlessly crammed by a doorway, the Rebel with the plans ran to the doorway’s terminal, anxiously pressing the button. The door began to slide open, but jammed after opening by a fraction, just enough space for an arm to reach through.
“It’s stuck!” One of them shouted as the other began to desperately punch at the door, trying to alert one of the Rebels on the other side.
The corridor was suddenly thrown into darkness as the lights vanished. The Rebel cried, trying to be heard over the siren. There was a sound; something was coming. The Rebels all turned to face the void, frightened of whatever it was.
They heard a loud clunk, then footsteps echoed down the corridor. Heavy breathing filled the corridor next; it was no it. A red blade zapped into the darkness, a figure in black appeared in the red luminous glaze that followed.it was Darth Vader, for a moment the Rebels looked dumbfounded, they couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Open fire!” one of the Rebels screamed. The Rebels began firing at the armoured Sith.
Red blaster bolts lit up the rest of the corridor, and echoes of the blasters sounded throughout. Darth Vader deflected every bolt, deflecting them back at the Rebels. Painful cries reverberated throughout the corridor.
It was hopeless. “Help us!” the Rebel at the back shouted, furiously banging on the glass of the door.
Darth Vader approached, getting closer and closer. He was mere steps away from grasping the secret plans back into the Empire’s hands.
As Vader approached, he raised his other hand, and as he did, one of the Rebels began to shoot up, his corpse slamming against the ceiling. Only five Rebels remained.
The Rebel by the door continued to bang, when on the other side, a Rebel sprinted over to the doorway. “It’s jammed!” he gritted his teeth.
They both tried pulling the door open, but it was no use. The Sith put his hand out once more, force pulling the blasters out of the Rebels’ hands. They were defenceless. He slashed his lightsaber through one Rebel’s body and pulled another up with his hand, beginning to force choke the other. The final Rebel knew what had to be done; he shot his arm through the gap in the door, crying, ‘Here, here. Take it!’ As he looked over his shoulder, he saw Vader towering over him. He screamed as he felt the lightsaber pierce through his body, pushing through to the door, forcing it open.
Fortunately, the other Rebel snatched the plans and began to run to the airlock. He heard Vader’s footsteps quicken, and screams cry out behind him. He ran into the corvette’s airlock, tripping on the step. He looked up to see Vader moments away from him, slicing into the bodies of the Rebels. He quickly got to his feet as the Rebels on board hit the button to close the airlock. He ran into the corvette’s corridor, shouting for them to launch. As they did, he felt the corvette detach from the Rebel flagship and heard the engines begin to fire up. The ship hurried away from the flagship, beginning to calculate the jump to hyperspace.
The Rebels on board frantically prepared the ship for battle, whilst they hoped the Imperials wouldn’t hunt them down, they knew it was inevitable. A siren, like the Profundity’s, sounded, and the Rebel with the plans handed them over to a Rebel commander.
The commander began to speak, “Make sure you secure the airlock,” he began to walk onto the bridge.
“And prepare the escape pods!” he said confidently to the small group surrounding him.
He walked over to the bridge’s doorway. It slid open with a clang; a short, a hooded figure dressed in a white, flowing robe stood in front of him, facing the other way.
“Your highness,” the figure began to turn around, the Rebel commander reaching out his arm, holding the datacard before continuing, “the transmission we received.” He stated as the robed woman took a step down to approach him.
She reached out, taking the plans from him, looking down at them.
“What is it they’ve sent us?” he asked, trying to understand exactly what these secret plans were.
“Hope,” she answered, fiercely smiling as she turned to face the other way. As she spoke, they shot off into hyperspace. They had done it; they had escaped from the Empire. They live to fight another day, now they had to get the plans safely delivered to Rebel Command.
